Mount TBR 2016, checkpoint #1

The first three momths of the year have come and gone - shockingly - so it's time for the first checkpoint post for Bev's Mount TBR 2016.

I signed up to climb Mont Blanc, which involves reading 24 of your own books through the year. Those taking part have to do two things. First of all answer this question:

1. Tell us how many miles you've made it up your mountain (# of books read). If you're really ambitious, you can do some intricate math and figure out how the number of books you've read correlates to actual miles up Pike's Peak, Mt. Ararat, etc. And feel free to tell us about any particularly exciting adventures you've had along the way.

In the first three months of the challenge I've read 10 books. That's four ahead of where I should be so I'm very happy with that. It's possible I might make it to the level after Mont Blanc, which is Mount Vancouver, but I'm not putting pressure on myself to do so. If I do, I do, if I don't... no problem.

Secondly, Bev wants us to answer as many of her questions here as we fancy.

A. Post a picture of your favorite cover so far.

This was not too easy as when I looked at the list of book I'd read I saw there were three I rather liked. In the end I had to choose this:

The cover of The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson, mixing railway poster scenes of The White Cliffs of Dover and the little running man from the iconic 'Skegness is so bracing' poster, is inspired in my opinion. The perfect cover for this book and I love it.

C. Have any of the books you read surprised you--if so, in what way (not as good as anticipated? unexpected ending? Best thing you've read ever? Etc.)

The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tay surprised me. I wasn't very inspired by the cover to be honest, thought the book might be a bit dull. Wrong. It was a perfect little gem and I loved it from start to finish. It will definitely make my top five this year.

D. Title Scrabble: See if you can spell a word using the first letter of the first word in the titles of some/all of the books you have read so far. Feel free to consider "A," "An," or "The" as the first word or not as it helps you with your word hunt.

My word is TRAMP.

The Franchise Affair - Josephine Tey
The Road to Little Dribbling - Bill Bryson
Angel With Two Faces - Nicola Upson
Mystery in White - J. Jefferson Farjeon
Pompeii - Robert Harris

That was fun!

You're doing well, Cath - being ahead of your target is such a good feeling. And I agree about not putting pressure on yourself and to read what you want when you want regardless of challenges. I have to keep reminding myself of that.

Pat: LOL... er... well... yes, I actually think it might be... by about 3 books. LOL!

Yvonne: The Bryson cover is just magic. I love railway posters anyway so it couldn't really fail with me.

Nan: I would never part with the book because of the cover!

Margaret: I always like to get a good start with Mt TBR. Then I can relax for the rest of the year. It quite hard not to put that pressure on yourself though.

I am very impressed. Ahead of the game. Yay! I'm so far behind in my reading . . . sigh.
That is the best of covers on The Road to Little Dribbling. The book is on my list, but, right now I'm doing the audio of Bryson's 1927.

Not often I'm ahead of the game, Penny. LOL! I think the American cover of Little Dribbling is different to ours. Although if you listen to the audio that won't matter. I haven't read 1927... be interested to hear what you think of that.
