R.I.P. X

Autumn is almost here (our weather for the past few weeks in the UK has felt like it's already here) and with it comes the annual Readers Imbibing Peril challenge, or RIP for short. This year is its 10th. anniversary and to mark that Carl, who usually hosts it, is handing the reins to the ladies at The Estella Society. Nothing else has changed though, the Perils are still the same and so are the rules etc. So without further ado, R.I.P. X:

This lovely artwork is used with the kind permission of Abigail Larson.

As always there are various different ways to participate, you can just read a number of novels of your choice, you can read short stories, watch films, take part in the group read and so on.

As usual, I shall be doing:

Peril the First: Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be King or Conan Doyle, Penny or Poe, Chandler or Collins, Lovecraft or Leroux…or anyone in between.

I may also do:

Peril the short story. Which is to read short stories over the weekends or at other times if you prefer.

The rules:

1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.

The kind of books to read:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

Anyway, I have selected a few books I'd like to get to and these are they (click for a clearer view):

Which of these I'll get to I'm not sure, hopefully all of the novels, plus one or two that I have on my ereaders, and a reread of some of the short story volumes. We shall see.

Hope everyone has a lot of fun with RIP this year and many thanks to Andi and Heather at The Estella Society for hosting.

I looked yesterday for this - missed it today, so thanks Cath. I'll have to see what I can find for this challenge. I'm sure I must have some books that fit into those definitions!

Wilkie Collins belongs on every RIP list! Such fun reads. :) And I fully regret selling my copy of Nocturnes. Maybe I'll check it out from the library this year. Have a great RIP season!!

Pat: Oh yes... Woman in White has appeared on my list at least four times, probably more. LOL! This year I'm going to read it as it will also qualify for my Victorian Lit challenge... which I am *very* behind on. Somehow autumn feels like a good time to read Victorian books though.

Margaret: I almost missed it too so I'm glad you caught it via my post.

Kristen: Nocturnes has to be one of my favourite ever books of macabre stories. And there's a book 2 coming out early October!

Good luck with your Perils, Cath!

That is quite an ambitious list. My husband is a fan of both Lovecraft and M. R. James. My reading is tamer.

Bev: Thanks very much!

Tracey: The nice thing about RIP is that there's something for nearly everyone in the kinds of books that you can read. That's why it's so much fun. :-)

Your pile looks wonderful! And inspiring--as in you've really made me want to go add a Wilkie Collins book to my pile. I haven't read a single thing by him. *hangs head in shame* I have Nocturnes in my short story pile too, and I'm really hoping I get to at least a few stories from it. I think I gave myself too many options though...
Hope you have a super ton of fun, Cath!

Tidbitsandbabblings: Thank you! I've only read a couple of his books and some short stories. I seriously need to do something about that and am determined it shall be for this RIP.

Nocturnes is one of my all time favourite creepy anthologies.
