“Does something amuse you?’ asked Uncle Montague.
‘I was merely reminding myself, Uncle, that I am getting too old to be so easily frightened by stories.’
‘Really?’ said Uncle Montague with a worrying degree of doubt in his voice. ‘You think there is an age at which you might become immune to fear?”
― Chris Priestley, Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror
Carl's sign-up post is here.
I always love the artwork he chooses and have actually read the book the quote comes from, there are three in the series in fact, and all are excellent.
Anyway, the sort of books to read are:
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above.
There are two simple rules:
1. Have fun reading (and watching).
2. Share that fun with others.
As usual I'll be doing:
Which is to:
Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be King or Conan Doyle, Penny or Poe, Chandler or Collins, Lovecraft or Leroux…or anyone in between.
This is the book pool I'll be reading from:
(Click on the image for a better view)
I don't know how many of these I'll end up reading but I want most of the books I read to come from this - part of my tbr mountain - pile. If I can read five of them I would be a happy bunny. I also know I have books on my Kindle and Nook that would qualify for the challenge and one or two library books too. So we'll see. Basically I just want to have fun without putting too much pressure on myself.
Happy R.I.P. reading and many thanks to Carl for once again hosting this brilliant challenge.

I love this time of the year as well.
So many interesting books here -
Victorian Ghost Stories, now that's a book I'd like to get my hands on, also Tales of Terror. The Bram Stoker books look promising, too.
It's great to see The Woman in White, I really liked it.
Enjoy your books!
I wish I had a few "shorter" books but it seems everything I own is of large size ..humph.. anyway I will join and I commit to only 1 (already read) and 3/4 thru a second rip book so I hope to read at least 3... I really don't have any that seem really good "gothic" reads unfortunately.
I am surprised you haven't read the Woman in White! thought sure you had.
I would wish you good luck but lately you are reading at the speed of a bullet so I know you will do well lol..
Ooh, what an interesting collection of books! A lot of collections there, too, and older ghost stories. As always I can't wait for your reviews, you know you always point me to new books to read! :-)
I can't believe it's that time of year so soon. But yes it has been autumnal recently and the leaves are already falling!
Happy reading!
You have a lot of great classics in there! The Michael Cox collection of ghost stories is full of fantastic tales. Have a great season!
Great stack of books to be choosing from. I wish I could get into ghost stories. I should try. Can't believe it is this time of year already.
Looks like good fun and like your stackmof books. There look to be some good ones in there.
Delia: Victorian Ghost Stories is *excellent*. I've read it before and may dip into it again for short story weekends. I haven't read much Wilkie Collins and want to put that right.
Pat: I don't think I've read The Woman in White. It's like with Rebecca... I can't remember if I've read that either. My brain is addled. LOL. Anyway, I plan to read The Woman in White this time for sure.
Susan: I own a lot of older collections that I collected in the early 90s when I discovered the Victorian ghost story. I went crazy reading as many collections as I could. Those I own are rather precious to me I have to say.
Margaret: Autumn seemed to set in the first week of August. Our runner bean wig-wam is looking quite chilled and looks like it would normally look in late September. Very odd.
Kristen: Yes, I love the Michael Cox collection and wouldn't part with it for the world.
Tracy: I didn't really get into ghost stories until I was entering my forties. Before that I don't think I even knew there was such a genre.
Pam: Thank you, I'm quite pleased with my pool of books I have to say. Nothing like a stack of books to get your teeth into.
I've been in the mood to read all three Tales books by Priestly. Such good, gothic, creepy fun.
No need to resist anymore, R.I.P. is here, much as I am having a hard time believing that we are a couple of days away from Sept. 1. Crazy how fast the river of time flows by.
I love your enthusiasm, Cath, and am so glad you are in once again.
What a great pile! I haven't read any of these, so I'm excited to hear your thoughts. Happy RIP!
Carl: I agree, the Priestley books are so good.
I know, it's scary... I'm starting to hear people on TV talk about Christmas!
Thanks, Carl!
Lu: Thank you!
Enjoy Cath! I haven't read any of those! Look forward to hearing about them :)
Interesting pile. I am pleased to see some Sherlock Holmes and interested to see Bram Stoker as I've only read Dracula. Good luck and enjoy!
I think this RIP is going to be even harder on the wish list than it is most years (and that's saying something!), because so many people have so many books on their piles that I've never even heard of, let alone read, before! Hope you enjoy every single one you get to!!!
Chris: Thanks! I always love seeing what others read for RIP.
Thebookwormchronicles: I always try to read *some* Sherlock Holmes for R.I.P. I've only read a couple of Stokers so definitely want to read more.
Debi: RIP is always hard on my wishlist, like you said, so many books out there I've never heard of and that sound great. Thank you!
Good luck!
Thanks, Bev!
